60's / The Beatles and The British Invasion, Motown, Psychedelia and the beginnings of Heavy Metal

70's / Arena Rock, FM Radio, Punk, Drugs and Rock & Roll. And disco

80's / New Wave, House, Hair Metal and MTV

90's / Grunge, Alternative, RockCountryPop and Boy Groups

00's / Pop Idol, The X Factor, American Idol, everybody reforms and every possible Genre and subgenre imaginable

even if you wish to stay in the last 100 years, you are missing the 40´s 30´s and 20´s which all had important changes in music as well. but if i ad to choose 1810-1820

Having recently been introduced to "Nursery Crymes" by Genesis, I have to emphatically say the 70s!! Most brilliant album I've heard!

Agreed. These pissing matches over who can google up the (arguably) first band in a certain genre is lame.

I still say 70s thanks to Genesis and Popul Vuh.

Popul Vuh is probably the greatest band ever in the history of the Earth.
