It's not necessarily the percentage of protein in a supplement or food, but the quality of the protein. I recommend Bob's Red Mill whey. I can't find that anywhere around me now. Also, I used to drink Muscle Milk, now I just drink organic milk. Your better off consuming real food and drink: organic/farm raised/GMO-free than the majority of stuff they sell at the vitamin aisle.

I searched through the forum and all of the protein discussions are a couple of years old, therefore I thought this would be a good discussion on some of the best proteins and advice.

I'm in the market for a new whey protein, I've been using the NOW protein which seemed perfectly find but my buddy has been pushing me to try Carnivor protein. The guy is ripped.

Your buddy is probably ripped because the rest of his diet is fine tuned, not because of his brand of whey.

I also use kaizen, chocolate in water. Also plain PC isolate in Greek yogurt.

I would have to agree. It's his overall diet that's getting him the results. Protein intake alone cannot define muscle....Definitely helps but other factors have to come into play.

A good fat-burner can melt away excess fat and a diuretic can get rid of water ....which will both help to give you a cut look.

I like a brand called Jay Robb, sold mostly at Whole Foods. That said, I prefer the egg white to the whey because I think it tastes better and is less clumpy when mixed. I also remember reading that egg white is preferable for anything other than directly post-workout because your body process it slower and therefore you receive more benefit from it.

I firmly believe that Optimum Nutrition's Platinum Hydro Builder is the best post workout protein supplement on the market.

This is a little blurb from their website:
"Platinum Hydrobuilder starts with a foundation of blended proteins and CreaPep peptides. 2.5 grams of BetaPower Betaine and 5 grams of Micronized Creapure Creatine complement an amino acid matrix that includes at least 13.5 grams of naturally occurring and added essential amino acids. At just 180 calories per serving, Platinum Hydrobuilder is ON's most comprehensive muscle building formula."

Of course we all react to supplements differently, so I recommend ordering a bunch of samples and seeing how your body reacts.

Cheers!

I stick to Dymatize Elite. Tastes the best, is slightly cheaper than ON, and is pretty clean. Also mixes pretty well. I recommend cinnamon bun or vanilla.

The "new formula" for the vanilla tastes like liposuction, avoid at all costs. The chocolate is great, and the strawberry is one of the best I've had, just takes a little longer to mix.

I tried a sample of hydrolisate protein today, sweetened with stevia. Not bad.

Musclepharm and Arnold are ****. Just get Pro Jym. Tells you exactly what is inside of it, no 'proprietary' labels or ingredients. Musclepharm is ripping off his products in their new "hardcore' series that just came out.

Just get ON Gold Standard. Truenutrition is great for isolate, never tried their whey but their products are decent. Not really that big of a deal if you get whey that isn't a rip off.

So much misinformation in this thread.

I searched through the forum and all of the protein discussions are a couple of years old, therefore I thought this would be a good discussion on some of the best proteins and advice.

Beef protein is some of the worst protein on the market imo. It's marketed as "steak protein," but made from what they can't put into hot dogs, scraps that aren't suitable for dog food. Taste is odd at best, downright gross at worst. Your friend being ripped has zero to do with his protein choice.

forgive me if this is too big a question to answer or it's obvious, but what's the difference between 'worse' and 'better' whey powders?

Worse = amino spiked so you might be getting say half of the label's value of protein. Also, taste/mix-ability.

USN make my favourite - especially IGF-1 - but this is a whey and caesin blend.

Every time I log on to order new supplements online, there is always some new brand being marketed.

Keen to try Grenade's protein powder though - they have made excellent fat burners and pre-workout for a few years and only just released a protein range. Kris Gethin (the DTP guy from bodybuilding.com) is one of the endorsers.

Hydra6 is pretty good - Strawberry Siege has nice small pieces of strawberry in it, Cookie Chaos has cookie pieces and tastes very similar to Protogen.

Would never buy anything from this company after the fiasco they had a few years back when they sued so many people.

The only thing that "burns fat" is a caloric deficit. Products that provide energy or GDAs can help - if you're looking into this a clean y product + caffeine + F95 would be the best place to start.

It's funny - protein spiking has been common knowledge in the industry for easily 12+ years now.

Pro Jym is alright - plenty of 3rd party tested proteins out that taste better.

Best proteins out there:

Blue Star Nutraceuticals (Use code TCYNG5 for additional 5% off): Blue Star Whey Smooth - their Chocolate Covered Banana, Milk & Cookies, Chocolate Peanut Butter cup are all absolutely delicious

PES Select: Snickerdoodle is outrageously good

Xtreme Formulations Ultra Peptide 2.0 (not as macro friendly, but best tasting): Lemon Cream Pie is GOAT

True, but it is also $10-20 cheaper than both of the proteins you linked (Blue star/PES).

Pro Jym $53 for 46 servings
Blue star $64 for 50 servings
PES $70 for 55 servings

Pro Jym $53 for 46 servings
Blue star  $64 for 50 servings
PES $70 for 55 servings

Those proteins taste a ton better than ProJym, are cheaper than ProJym (BS on sale, PES normal), and have better profiles than ProJym (not to mention I've seen tests verifying protein content is more than listed).

When I posted the link Blue Star was on sale for $48.74 @ 50 servings. Normally sells for $64.99 through BB.com, but has been on sale ~20% off which makes it less than ProJym - next sale I know of for sure is ~ April 10th - BB.com anniversary sale that they will be taking part in (although they have some other non-protein products on sale currently).

A little unfair you're quoting PES prices from their site - on BB.com it's $49 for 55 servings.

And in case you'd like to try it out, sign up for their insider (PES Science: Insider) and you'll get an email for great deals. Next sale is coming up this Wednesday and their debuting a new Select flavor: Peanut Butter Cup.

I've tasted the new flavor coming out and it's really solid, but would suggest snickerdoodle if you're trying it for the first time.

Man up and mix unflavoured whey with water. Avoid all the filler and sweetener crap.
