    Proposing the following hypothetical situation:

    1. You are single, non-attached, no pets, and have self sufficient family. Therefore you have no significant "tie downs."

    2. You make something in the range of 150-200K a year and you have the option of flying/traveling to your work site or working from home. Your location is therefore largely irrelevant for work purposes as you won't be trying to find a job in local industry and you make enough $ to live at least comfortably in most locales though probably not extravagantly.

    3. You are 25-30 and would ideally like to move to a place where building a new social life of your peers would be more naturally occurring than a stretch (e.g. major metropolitan area).

    4. You would like to avoid Washington DC and the surrounding areas.

Given the chance to pack up and move, where would you relocate to in the United States, and why?

I would move outside the United States.

    Otherwise, probably San Diego.

I don't know why you assume that's harder in a major metropolitan area. I think the greater anonymity in a big city is about equally offset by the greater likelihood of finding people with similar affinities and interests.

The salary is a little light, but since in this scenario you're both young and single, San Francisco. A great combination of life style components, i.e. food, clothing, "scene," very close to wine country, a reasonable drive to several other places of interest, a short flight from even more, a couple of good universities in the area, etc.

Dood, if we're talking fall back jobs in an MSA as expensive as SF, you have to mention that.

Chicago. It's got 90% of New York with a much lower cost of living. And a beautiful lake.

150K for someone that is single is more than enough in NYC, let alone SF.

You're ruining the meme. Stop it.

Also, good call above, on Chicago.

Which is somewhat humorous considering I think I was the unfortunate source of the original 250k fallback job meme.

on the off chance that the OP is a hedonistic type, i would like to throw new orleans into the mix

150k can get you forever in new orleans, with enough cash left over to allow you to get away for hurricane season (august-september)
