I am just getting into sewing, although not using a machine at the moment. Just small jobs, like repairing buttons on my shirts etc..

Does anyone know of a place to get good quality thread either online or in a store (I am in NYC)

thanks

all threads are not alike. just like quality of cotton for shirts, the thread used also makes a difference. Granted not much difference if just sewing on buttons, but later when more is being done, threads will make a difference, reduce puckering etc

with that being said Guttermann thread is ok and not expensive

If you are hand sewing, you want to use silk thread. I use Gutermann.

I'm a big fan of Hy-Mark Glace for shirt button attachment. Steinlauf and Stoller had some last time I was there.

Saying "just use whatever thread" is bad advice, there's specific thread for specific applications. So you have to know what you're sewing before you get the thread.

Anyway someone mentioned the Hymark glazed thread for shirt buttons. Get the #24.
