Where to buy a 3-piece suit for under $1000?

I'm looking to buy a new suit. My gf thinks that I look good in vests (and I agree) so I thought a 3-piece would be nice. After poking my head into a few random stores, it seems that 3-pieces are far less common than I would have thought.

The bullet points:
  • It will be for weddings, parties and other dress-up occasions, never for work.
  • I live in the Boston area.
  • Under $1000
  • I'm 5' 10" 170 lbs, broad shoulders, small waist (I wear jeans with a 29" waist).
  • I like slim fitting clothes as opposed to the more "roomy" ones, I definitely want some taper in the jacket.
  • In my head I'm picturing something in a light grey.

I haven't bought a suit in years, any suggestions for stores? Is MTM online a reasonable option?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Forum affiliate Kent Wang does a sort of hybrid MTM thing and does fully canvassed three pieces for under $1,000.

See link:

I haven't tried it myself but am strongly considering it for a very similar piece to what you're contemplating (i.e., 3 piece, light gray). The idea is that Kent sends you a base suit in your normal size, and then you note what measurements you'd like adjusted. Send it back to him with the requested measurement adjustments, pick a fabric (the standard A fabrics go $865 for a three piece, nicer stuff from Loro Piana is a hair under $1,000), and he'll make it for you.

People have very different opinions on Indochino but if you think of it as a decently made custom-ish suit that will need tailoring, they can be pretty good. Not the highest quality but pretty good for the price and its hard to find a 3-piece at the 1k price point. Most are either much cheaper or way more expensive. This is an option: a 3-piece light grey suit. And it's way under your budget, so when it comes, spend the $75 tailoring credit and if needed more in order to make it fit like a glove. That being said, also make sure that your original measurements are correct. The best option would be to have your tailor do them for you, or if that isn't possible, make sure you use a soft tape measure. They can be had for a few bucks on Amazon. Hope that helps.

I just ordered their tailor's kit and read through some of the Indochina threads. It seems like there's a lot of hate on them right now, but most of the people who posted pics look pretty good to me (maybe the people who got terrible fits don't want to post pics).

I'm 3-piece suits biggest fan. It's 2 suits in one. I wear it one day with the vest and the next day without the vest and my co-workers think they are completely different suits. I don't understand why it's so hard to find them, shouldn't all suits be made with a matching vest?? Doesn't seem to be that much more fabric and 3-piece haters can just toss it if they want.

This led me to Mens Wearhouse. Enormous selection of vested suits. Always wait for their Buy One Get One Free sales, which come around about every month or so. I have 2 Jones NY, a RL, and a Tommy Hilfiger vested suits. They are all $550 regular, but I got all 4 for $1100. Yes, they are made in Asia and do not advertise their thread counts.

WHY NOT THESE: If you want it slim .... it is even light grey:

If you want something timeless, but still not boxy (but this one is charcoal with stripes)

In any case, you should get a CORPORATE CARD, e.g. at

http://lite.corporateperks.com/coup...scount/58339/uSource/MGAT/2x-points-15-saving

which will give you 15% off on regular priced stuff. With this you should be below $1000 incl. tax

ALTERNATIVE: Go to NYC, visit Paul Stuart and see if something is on sale.

Hey,

As you live in Boston, try some of the stores on Newbury street. I think Polo and Brooks Brothers should still be there. For your first suit you definitely want some professional help and assurance that your problems will be addressed in a seamless manner. Both stores are setup to do that, as they may have tailors on site and due to the economies of scale you won't break their bank if you decide to return/complain/etc. You really want to ensure that whoever measures you is a tailor or a seasoned sales associate who knows what he is doing.

Alternatively, take a train to NYC and take a look at flagship stores of the same brands + some reputable tailors there.

Finally, make sure you brush up on your suit knowledge, so at the very least you understand what tailors/sales reps are talking about.

I like Banana Republic for their frequent 40% off discounts. Their Monogram line is pretty decent at that price.
