Are you reporting that income to the IRS?

Not that I doubt you, but what's your basis for saying that Avant is one of the top 10 salons in the country?  And where is it located?  When I lived in Austin, I got my hair cut at an Aveda salon because I couldn't find anyone else as good.  I get my hair cut now at Arrojo Studio in New York.  $85 for a cut from a mid-level stylist for which I've received lots of compliments.

I believe my numbers were a bit off, but according to the quotes on their site, they're "Best of Southwest" according to Harpers and "Best Color Salon" according to Elle. It's certainly conceivable that big cities like New York and LA will have a number of better salons; I don't mean to imply otherwise, but simply wish to note that it is a pretty well-regarded salon.

Hmm, that's actually looks like where I got my hair cut when I lived in Austin. They must have changed the name or something.

whenever im back in my hometown in australia, i get it cut by the same little old italian barber thats been cutting it since i was 18. its one of the few things adelaide has going for it. He charges me AU$10 - so about seven bucks.

in vietnam - this ought to make you jealous..... 50000 Vietnam dong at a salon includes hair cut, hairwash, face wash, face massage, shave and one hour body massage in a reclined barbers chair.

So thats about three bucks, no tip required, but i normally toss the massage/hairwash girl a buck or two.

ive also had it cut by a streetside barber here (cultural experience) - that cost me 7000 dong - about 40 cents.

I used Chelsea Barbers for years and was happy until the Fab 5 and GQ exposed them to the general public, my wait went from 10 minutes to over 90 minutes on a bad day.

Based on a recommendation from a forum member I recently started to use Chantal from Salon Ishi. Not much change left from $100 so its not cheap.
I rather pay the extra $$ now that I can get my haircut during my lunch hour.

The place I go to is derinitely a salon then. Most of the barbers are women or gay.(One of them was the first gay man to be married in Belgium).
The same spanish lady does my hair.
Shampoos my hair (a little massage too).
She cuts my hair while I have an espresso.
Puts some gel in it and I am gone.
    20 Euros.

$20 from Diego the barber next to Firehook Bakery off Dupont. Old school, walls festooned with pictures of dozens of swarthy diplomatic staff who allegedly have had their hair cut there. Does me a decent job and that's all I want nowadays. I used to use an expensive place in Berkeley but really have nothing to justify right now. 3 years ago treated myself to a cut and hot shave at Taylors on Jermyn St for the RJ birthday. Awesome. In India got a cut on Pali Hill at a salon apparently used by Aishwarya Rai... wonderful massage, cut, shampoo... Surreal.

As barbers die and stylists leave, I have gone back and forth between salons and barber-shops. Presently I go to a new place that is a bit of a hybrid of the two. Good scenery, with a touch of the old fashioned barber shop thrown in, and they do most of the cut with scissors, especially the finish . . . which I obsess about.

If a place asks me what number I like, it's generally the last time I go there.

I once had an evening wedding in Chicago, and although I had shaved early that morning, by about 3:00 I had a little stubble, so I went to Truefitt & Hill, explained to the guy that I had shaved earlier, and just wanted a reshave to beat back the stubble. He proceeded to shave me within a nanometer of my life against the grain . . . I think I was referred to as "lobster boy" at the wedding.

Hmm, m@T, you had me beat in price but not in service. They clean the ear canal for me too(using some kind of device that applies pressure to the ears).

I get my hair cut at a barber shop by a 30 year old Italian guy named Tony.

I tell him to cut it so that it looks "business-like" and "wall-street". He does a perfect job.

He also gives good straight razor shaves.

Straight razor shaves, eh? Part of a dying breed (in the USA at least). Enjoy! [IMG]

I cut my own whenever it feels too long and when I'm not in Asia as I've had a hell of a time trying to find someone who can handle Asian hair well in the US.
