Where do clothes go when they don't sell

When clothes don't sell at retail they go to an outlet or discount store. I get that. When clothes don't sell at an outlet or at a discount store, for example, Loehmann's or Filene's, what happens with them?

If I recall correctly the logos/tags are removed before they're donated

Supposedly Hermes burns all of its past season stuff - supervised by KPMG. Ensures exclusivity.

I think they get donated and yes the logos and labels possibly get removed before that in order to avoid some sort of bad pub.

When I heard that LV burnt their unsold bags, I decided to boycott them!

Apparently, the brands are concerned that their customers will see the items they have bought on homeless people; but you do have to wonder just how self-centred and insecure one would have to be to care, even if one did, don't you?

Apparently, they think it will lower the perceived value of their items, if they're seen to have been sold off for next-to-nothing, or given away and I can see where they are coming from, to a certain extent, of course. However if, when one bought the item, one was happy with the item and its price, surely that should be all that matters?

Surely, if (probably years down the road) one sees one's item on a homeless person, one should just be happy to see that someone less fortunate than oneself has some warm, comfortable, clothes to wear?

I'm sure some people would be shallow enough to immediately decide to stop wearing the offending article of clothing, even if it's still a favourite, but I would hope most of us wouldn't be?

I also hope most of us wouldn't boycott a brand, in future, because of it?

They go to sartorial heaven, which is filled with Hanger Project hangers and Kent brushes.

If that's true, it's utterly shameful.

I think I'd be more likely to buy a luxury company if they donated unsold merch.... Then again MOST people buy Hermes or LV to be seen in it, not for quality.

You have to be very careful who you donate clothes too. The Clothes bins we often see are not for the needy but part of a multi million dollar business which sells them to the African market. You Old Armani jeans end up being sold a few weeks later in Cameroon or Nigeria for relatively high prices. Everyone along the way earns and you just wanted to do people a favour

I actually applaud Hermes, if it's true, for destroying old merchandise. This is the high end luxury market so don't mix it up with Banana Republuc jeans or Brooks Brothers dress shirts which can be found at thrift shops. There is a certain perception that must be paid (no pun intended) to the brand, and the cost is exclusivity.

As for H&M and WalMart destroying clothing, that is different subject. Unworn clothing is simply a different matter, and if you are destroying that instead of donating, maybe you should do a better job in your logistics department and have them come to you instead.
