Get on your feet and go and look in the shops. Internet buying is not mandatory.

Seriously, GBR. Say the guy lives in Podunk, USA and not near a major city, what chance does he have of finding a jacket like that? Let me answer that....zero. Zero chance.

Okay, this might be a dumb question, but what exactly is an Army Navy surplus store? Can you name one of them?

Google "safari jacket" use images to see all the variations. First two jackets that came up on my search were almost identical to the images you posted. One from Orvis and the other from Cabela's

i am biased, Family business, now run by my sister.

    most towns have one,
Imagine the local store that sells clothing for hunting.
orvis and cabelas would be modern variations on a military surplus store.

Those are fashion driven civilian takes on the M65 field jacket, or a similar field jacket. You can find legitimate M65s in army surplus stores, as stated above by shirtmaven. These will tend to be very hefty jackets made for real military use. The ones you linked to on the other hand look like the various mall brand takes in which the canvas they are constructed with is much thinner and less rugged and the jacket itself is more fitted.

I had something like that I got from a thrift store maybe 8 or 9 years ago. It was originally one of Urban Outfitters' house brands. I wore it literally to shreds before retiring it. I could never really find a replacement but the closest I got was American Eagle and other low end offerings. The slim fitting nature and cheap thinness of the material was actually what I was seeking out over the legitimate and well craft military surplus offerings.
