It's kind of annoying of asking someone to do it every time.

I only want to know the basics like how to sew a button, hem pants, let out pants etc.

Any good free resources?

Sew buttons is very easy. Ask Andy has a section by Alex Kabbaz about how to sew a beautiful button with shank.

As far as hemming pants and all that, you can probably take a sewing class from the local shops that sells sewing machines.

most fabric stores have sewing classes. some high schools have evening classes.
if you speak to the instructor and discuss what it is you wish to learn, i am sure that a course could be "tailored" for you.

I learned from my mom.

This is a good question, though, because hemming something up or repairing a piece of clothing on your own is, to me at least, very gratifying. Kind of a zen to it - like polishing shoes.
