I guess by that logic I can improve the weight on my squats when I stall by replacing the 45 lb olympic bar with the skinnier 25 lb bar and adding two 5 lb weights, since you only count the plates after all. Sweet! Way to cheat myself!

Sorry, but I haven't read anything so stupid ever, not even when morbid curiosity overtook me one day and I read some of the threads in the teen section of bodybuilding.com's forum. Even they know better.

You count the weight you lift, bar included. Come on guys, common sense.

The other way doesn't make any sense at all except in some sort of macho head game parallel universe. You are measuring the weight you lift- it doesn't get much more complicated than that.

Sorry, I'm probably being too hard on the OP, I just realized it's possible (hopefully) he got an at home gym set from Oshmans or something where the "plates" are filled with sand and the bar weighs next to nothing.

If its an E-Z bar used to put olympic plates, its 15 kilos or 33 pounds and not 45 pounds.
Anyway, I much rather use those pre-fixed E-Z bars. Less time putting up and putting down the weights on the E-Z bar.

Suppose I do weighted chins or dips, do I include my bodyweight on top of the external load?

You're effectively not counting 1/9th of your lift. Congratulations.

Really, Can't imagine how that is done, unless the bar is thick.

Quit splitting hairs, do you count the collars? Not the fat transformer gonard looking ones but the small butterfly ones. What about if there's a chip on the plate? You count that too? What about your weight? If you take a big dunk between sets, do you take that into account?
