When to wear a Madras Jacket?

I always got the sense that a madras jacket didn't go with itself.

It's not something I'd wear but I like that jacket. Informal summer wear and best worn no more than a mile from the coast. Proximity to the sea brings out sartorial eccentricity in Anglo-Saxons and it may as well be something appealingly offbeat, like the above, than bright orange board shorts or cropped cargo pants.

I'd wear one, but only at a British or university garden party. There are very few contexts in which it's appropriate.
