When to use a dark blue velvet jacket?

Suddenly, out of nowhere, my tailor handed me a dark blue velvet jacket. It fitted perfectly, or will if I loose 2 kg. But it is eminently useable already. My tailor got it as a gift from a MTM shop whose customer had not collected it, and it did not fit him. So he offered it to me, a very good customer, I think, and I gladly accepted! This is not an item I have owned before, and I do not think my social life have included many with these kind of jackets. My first inclination is to match it with a white shirt, a nice tie and charcoal trousers, but when to use it? And I would be grateful for suggestions for what to wear it with.

That was a nice tailor! What kind of lapels does it have? Silk or self faced, peak or shawl?

Permanentstyle has a recent piece on velvet jackets.

The lapels are the same velvet. The jacket is still at the tailor’s, so I am unable to check the shape.

Then i guess you have a nice hybrid that can be dressed up with a Black bow tie and tux trousers or be worn as any other blazer.

I just posted this in the ‘The State Of Black Tie’ thread. Just for fun really as I’m not wearing any tie. Got the jacket for a song a few years ago and have had it on a couple of times usually at house parties during the festive season. Marcella bib fly front shirt, tuxedo strides, velvet slippers. Details on my blog.

Way back when, we used to wear velvet jackets with Levis and a spray painted Doc Martens.

Velvet jackets are great, as they're not subject to being paired with dinner trousers with silk stripe. The look can be broken down depending on where you might where it to. Also not restricted to wearing with a Marcella shirt. A clean poplin shirt with a cutaway collar will give it the look of formality without being over the top. Charcoal trousers are a good shout, but you have to consider the footwear style that will sit well with the look. Is it a double breasted/ single breasted/ shawl collar jacket?

Single breasted with normal lapels.
Works even better for a more casual cocktail look. Crisp white poplin shirt with a study cutaway collar, worn open, that sits perfectly against the lapel of your jacket, and particularly in poplin, as it's flat weave texture will not draw attention away from that of your jacket, which should remain the central part of your outfit.

This was of interest to me, as I have a dark blue velvet 4 x 1 double-breasted, shawl lapel dinner jacket on order from a local tailor. I figure that I'll just wear it to the occasional dinner at nicer-than-average restaurants and the [very odd, for me] nice party. I figure that it'll be fun.

Concurrently with the jacket, I commissioned midnight blue trousers with a satin striping on the seems, but in gabardine, because I rather liked it as I was poring over a bunch book. I figure that it'll be fine in an era when people will describe three odd pieces worn together as a three-piece suit, but I do wonder how appropriate that cloth would be. (Worth noting, my tailor also suggested that I consider charcoal grey trousers)
