My friend was playing dragon quest 8 after my suggestion and one day i was asking how he was doing at a friend's house with about 5 other people in the room. The more we talked about it and the more specific we got, there was no way in the world not to sound like a complete nerd. Same thing happened when i was trying to help my friend in a part he was confused about in final fantasy xii. Before i started, i just laughed, took a deep breath and just went ahead and did it. I knew i was going to sound like a nerd but there was no other way.

So I guess really you can't stereotype a "gamer."

I know a woman who wears Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana and who is a self-confessed WoW gamer.

HAHAHHAHAHAHA. This thread has been gold. I think the reason most people find gaming geeky is because of the "fantasy" background that gets associated with it. I mean people never look at guys who like racing games as nerds nor do they carry that stigma. Personally I cant stand the "Fantasy" world. I prefer to a slight extent, more of a SciFi/futureistic approach, but not too far as like Starwars/Star Trek ****.

rnoldh,

I suspect I'm only vaguely more knowledgeable than you in regards to this troubling trend (see the front page article of Friday's WSJ Weekend section for an illuminating and chilling example). Back from a weekend of reality to find it's still going strong. As they used to say, "at least it keeps kids off the streets...". Unfortunatetly kids now need to spend more time on the streets, in the backyards, etc.

On a Neverwinter Nights persistent world, I played a fabulously flamboyant dwarven zealot. He was known not only for his fits of rage and complete lack of tact, but also for his lilac-scented perfumes and dandy-like clothing.

Edit: By the way, my main in WoW is a blood-elf chick. I cyber with dwarves in the tram tunnels for gold.
