I've started wearing a hat with a brim all around. When is this acceptable?

A hat is acceptable anytime.

Just take it off when you are inside someone's home, an office, a restaurant or a bar (although an exception could be made for the lobby of an office building) and remove it when you are in an elevator.

And take it off during the National Anthem. I can't believe how many people don't do this.

When you're an archaeologist or when you want people to ridicule you behind your back. At no other time.

Follow that advice and you'll stay forever in jeans & teeshirt.

Wear a hat when you want to. It's a particularly good idea in sunny weather - a plain trilby style panama is practical and shows that you care about your appearance. In colder weather there's probably more choice of styles that are broadly suitable : a particularly useful one being an Akubra 'drover' type.

My hair seems less prolific than it was (I'm not balding : Ive just grown too tall for my hairstyle, of course

) and I really find the sun and cold to have become a major consideration - there are few things more painful than a sunburnt pate.

This. When your head is cold, a hat will help. When its hot, and don't want to lop on sunscreen or get burned, a hat will help.

You mean there's a time when you would leave the house without a hat?

I think it depends where you live/work. You can rock it whenever you want, but I think being older helps make the look more acceptable.

I actually think that hats look more stylish on a younger than older guys. I would assume that younger guys are wearing a hat to be stylish, an older guy is just under orders from his gerontologist.

I was outbid on this hat (my top bid was $410) currently $925. Ebay item #160576044795.
