It makes the coat look significantly older. It also doesn't make sense because you're only supposed to have elbow patches after wearing through the elbows yourself. Buying a new one with patches makes as much sense as buying one with holes in the elbows.

I think there's precedent for elbow patches as a purely stylistic (as opposed to strictly functional) element. I have an old Henry Poole jacket in heavy cheviot tweed with the sort of horn buttons normally associated with Tyrolean clothing and grey suede elbow patches. It's a bit of an oddity, I suppose. The elbow patches certainly play up the country aura.
I also have an old Matsuda jacket done up in a bit of a Frankenstein/Incredible Hulk style with the torn bits stitched together with suede. Needless to say, it also features elbow patches.
I'm also down with the CB T&A!
