When is a hacking jacket appropriate?

I've long been a fan of English hacking jackets: ticket pocket, side vents, hourglass shape, wool tweed, etc. Now that I've finally picked this one up from J. Crew (http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product...d=prod71855671), I wonder what would be the most appropriate environment for wearing it. Unfortunately, I am neither an English country gentleman nor do I ride horses. However, I am still in my 20s and I think that I can get away with breaking some rules. Where, when, or with what would you guys wear this jacket?

I was surprised to see it myself. I followed a link posted on here last week and it worked....check the site out--there were many things in lots of sizes marked down significantly.

I have one, and I wear it with abandon. Here it is:

I wore it throughout the fall and winter, and was sad to put it away for spring. It's surprisingly versatile -- great for both casual wear and semi-casual occasions. Mine is very warm, too, so it's great for outdoor purposes, even when horses aren't involved.

Like you, I was a bit bothered, at first, by the prospect of wearing a hacking jacket for other than its traditional purposes. But I like my jacket so much I quickly got over it. It's one rule I don't mind breaking. Plus, your coat was sold through J. Crew, so I imagine it's meant to be worn like a sportcoat anyway. How many J. Crew customers would even know what a hacking jacket is?

P.S., the tie isn't mine.

Just wear it like you would any other tweed jacket. The simple addition of the word "hacking" to the name doesn't change its uses. What can I wear my tweed jacket (that happens to have leather buttons, double-vents, and hacking pockets) with?

If some moron says something to you about looking horsey, remind him that although you are no longer permitted to ride to the hounds in England, that like all good country gentlemen, you're armed.

BTW, be careful with that J. Crew jacket: it's got sewed-on elbow patches. I think that will make it significantly less versatile. If it didn't have the patches, I think it would go with lots of things: many clothing items like motorcycle jackets, polos, polo coats, jeans, etc. are worn well outside their original environment.

What's so awful about leather patches? I can remove them pretty easily but I don't see why they would make the coat significantly less versatile.

AlanC: beautiful coat, although I've always associated hacking jackets with darker earth tones. Yours seems like it is a little more versatile because of the lighter color and (it appears) finer cloth.
