I'm going to Rome with the beautiful, intelligent girlfriend (K: Yes, I did suspect you read this) for Christmas and New Year's, and as I actually prefer older stuff to new, I wondered if anyone has tips about thrift shops, flea markets, vintage clothiers and places like that. Most people I know only make beelines for the Gucci/Prada/Armani flagship shops, so it's no use asking the local talent. Other tips for shopping, sightseeing and eating are also much appreciated, although I already have a list of churches, museums etc. longer than my arm. We'll be staying in a flat not far from the Trevi fountain.

Finding thrift shops in Italy can be difficult; people have different ideas about used clothes than in the US/UK/elsewhere. They do exist; I found a great on in Florence. Not sure about Rome.

LS, so are we, right before Xmas, til the 29th. Dunno if we'd be able to arrange a meetup but if you happen to see a charming fella that looks like yours truly strolling about be sure to say hello, or at least come up and punch me in the face

I know we'll be in the shopping area (via condotti?) on the 26th with some friends we're meeting so if you are there too, keep an eye out as I am sure I will stand out like a sore thumb

Aha! I'd completely forgotten that you are honeymooning in Rome. I'll send you a PM with my details - I'll be bringing my mobile and lap-top there.

I think that the Trevi fountain is quite close to famous Mimmo Siviglia (on Via Urbana). Not that they have any old stuff, it is rather new, I mean, the shirts they sell are not even made yet. I just tell you because my wife refused to let me enter the shop, afraid that it would be too expensive and that I would not resist breaking the budget after having looked at the different wonderful cloths...
Now, I did try and like the restaurant, Taverna Urbana I think it is called, just across the street from Mr. Siviglia. I especally liked the turbot with potatoes and artichokes. It actually made me start to using artichokes myself back home, when baking fish in the oven.
Now, it is not a luxuary restaurant, just a nice place where they treat you in a friendly way and where I also saw some locals enjoying the food. The kind of place I like to visit when I am abroad.

I found a few vintage stores around Piazza Navona. I think that were on via del Governo Vecchio, although I don't quite remember.
