    Jealous.

My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
Been so long I felt this way, I'm in no hurry, no
Rainbows and down that highway where ocean breezes blow
My time coming, voices saying they tell me where to go.

Don't worry about me, nah nah nah, don't worry about me, no
and I'm in no hurry, nah nah nah, I know where to go.

California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine.

My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go.

Don't worry about me, no no no, don't worry about me, no
and I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go.

California, a prophet on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine.

You've all been asleep, you would not believe me
Them voices tellin' me, you will soon receive me
Standin' on the beach, the sea will part before me
Fire wheel burning in the air!

You will follow me and we will ride to glory, way up, the middle of
    the air!

And I'll call down thunder and speak the same and my work fills the
    sky with flame
and might and glory gonna be my name and men gonna light my way.

My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no

Don't worry about me, no no no, don't worry about me, no
and I'm in no hurry, no no no, don't worry about me, no.

It won't have one until 2009.

We have plenty of law schools in CA, but Orange County doesn't have a really good one (apologies to Chapman and Whittier) and would probably benefit from having a UC-backed school. I understand that Donald Bren is putting up $20MM for the naming rights to the "Donald Bren School of Law."

As opposed to Trump, Bren really has money.

Before the school even opens, it's already in knee deep in controversies.

L'Affair Chemerinsky: A Battle in the LA Times

I know, this is how I became aware of it. It's like Bizarro World. A UC campus firing a prof. for being too left wing? What's next? San Francisco going to host the next Southern Baptist convention at the Cow Palace?

My thought exactly. I wonder where this outside pressure came from. I don't know anything about CA internal politics, but could it be conservative benefactor not wanting to see his money support Chemerinsky?

Hadn't thought of that. Good explanation.

I found it interesting that Bren's official line is that he doesn't know enough about Chemerinsky to have an opinion on him.

I found it interesting that Bren's official line is that he doesn't know enough about Chemerinsky to have an opinion on him.

Well I don't see why he would have known much about him before his name might have come up as a candidate - he is a legal celebrity, but not as well known outside legal circles as someone like Larry Lessig.

Also, I don't believe a shrewd businessman like Bren would pressure the Chancellor to rescind the offer of the deanship: Bren obviously supports the idea of a successful law school at UCI, since he just donated $20M. He would know that forcing Chemerinsky out that this point would create a storm of negative publicity that would only delay the school's launch and hurt its reputation, thereby hurting Bren's investment.

If he doesn't like the politics of the inaugural dean, he might attempt to apply pressure and have him eased out soon after the school has gotten off the ground, or if Chemerinsky started talking reckless and scaring away other donors.

But none of that happened yet. The 8/29 LA Times editorial was Chemerinsky's business as usual (he mentioned in a NPR radio interview I heard yesterday that he has written over 100 LA Times Op-Eds). Chemerinsky was assembling an advisory board that included conservative scholars (Viet Dinh) as well as liberal scholars. He hadn't made any controversial public comments since he was offered the job. It's really sort of mystifying, and I think a major misstep for Chancellor Drake. At least he could tell the public why he rescinded the offer, instead of vaguely claiming "management reasons" that were not affected by political considerations..

That's my understanding, in part from back-channel whispers. Interestingly, from the news reports, the Chancellor's claim that he received no outside pressure appears to be contradicted both by Chemerinsky's own account and that of members of the Search Committee that helped him pick Chmerinksy in the first place.

My own take was that the Chancellor's comments on the radio this morning struck me as bizarrely circular and evasive, and not very well thought-out.

    .

Well, I have to imagine that he knows people who know people. I would find it surprising if someone lined up to be a major patron of the law school not do some asking around, if only out of intellectual curiousity, about the proposed dean.

Of course I'm sure he was able to find out who Chemerinsky was, but the PR statement struck me as probably relatively genuine (as PR statements go).

Replaced by a liberal Democrat. The OC is not the same OC it was in the 80s.

And, anyway, the UC is not run from the OC. The UC is PC.
