When a western shirt makes you look like a plain old hick...

So it's spring, and living in the South, summerish weather is fast approaching and that means time to swap out some of the usual oxfords and button ups for some western numbers.

In digging through my closet I am finding that while a lot of my vintage stuff still looks nice and fresh, it just doesn't look relaxed when paired with darker raw denims. It winds up looking like I am playing cowboy dress up. given the fact it's Texas, it is even more likely to be taken this way.

All my westerns look great with broken in and prewashed lighter denim and have the bonus benefit of looking good even when paired with chucks or other sneakers instead of a boot.

So how do I keep from looking like a hick when I try to do darker denim with classic western button ups? will the right shoes help?

Additionally, first post. woohoo.

The likelihood of looking like a "hick" wearing any sort of well fitting clothing is pretty small. As long as you're not wearing cowboy boots or something, I wouldn't really worry about it.

I've running into this with chambrays more than western shirts. It's easier if you live somewhere cool, you can layer and alter the look. But I'm in Texas as well - wear dark denim, work boots and a blue chambray, and you're right on the edge of a Texas tuxedo no matter how fitted the shirt might all be.

So I'm pretty much sticking to OCBDs and safari/camp/work shirts (ala Filson, etc..). I prefer looking like a mechanic to rancher.

I think maybe your idea of hick is different then my all encompassing Texas definition. I'm not talking marsupial hillbilly meth cook. Perhaps I should have said 'cowboy costume' There are MANY well heeled 'hicks' in houston and dallas whose western shirts cost more than the average mans weeks pay and are tailored impeccably.

I get your point with fit helping and I tend to agree, but in Texas, in the right area even fit and finish won't avoid the cowboy connotation.

Absolutley agree with the layered comment, but alas a henley under or a jacket over are both out of the question on all but the coolest of afternoons drinking on the bar porch

Real cowboys (or at least, the ones I see on TV) wear clothes that fit like ours, generally. So yeah, maybe just avoid the Western shirts entirely if you're worried about that, or pair them with other hipster staples like Sansabelts instead of dark denim.

That's absolutely ridiculous. (That is assuming, of course, we're talking about the same style of shirts, here.)

Something like this is what we are talking about, right?

Western Shirts are a staple, wear them as such.

Are you in shape?

A well-fitted western shirt looks great with any jean and appropriate boots. There is a huge emphasis on swagger, though. If you can't carry yourself and support what you're wearing, you might as well be walking around naked.

I wear western shirts with my Schott Perfecto, especially when I can't decide on being either Don Johnson or Mickey Rourke.
