What's your resting heart rate?

Mine generally falls in the mid-60s, though I've rarely clocked it in the 50s. I'm 44. For what it's worth, blood pressure is ~100/60; I'm 6'1"/170lbs.

My situation is somewhat unusual - I had open-heart surgery in May 2009 (CABG-4), and a "side effect" of the surgery for me (it affects ~12% of patients post-surgery) is tachycardia (a cardiac electrical malfunction resulting in the heart beating too quickly). I take 25mg metoprolol (a time-release formulation) which regulates heart rate - when I've experimented being "off" the metoprolol, my resting heart rate commonly exceeds 100.

Of course, recovery from such drastic surgery is a pretty long haul, and I'm just now really gearing up to greatly improve cardiac fitness (to the extent that I am able). I've been doing moderate cardio (walking, cycling, hiking etc) on a consistent basis since a couple of months post-surgery, but I've started to intensify it the past few weeks, transitioning to running again; I've started mixing some sprints into my waking/running and so on. I try to limit myself to a heart rate of 160 (though I might touch 170+ sprinting before I get a bit concerned and slow down).

In the next week or so I'll start in on strength training (Ripptoe approach) to see how some body recomp and addition of lean mass might impact overall fitness.

My plan is to eventually get off the cardiac meds my cardiologist insists I take (in addition to the metoprolol, I take 10mg Lisinopril) - it will be interesting to see (i) to what degree I can improve aerobic fitness and (ii) if I can "reset" the heart electrically (by improving cardiac fitness) to reduce the tachycardia. We shall see!
