What's your opinion on wide notch-lapels? Tom Ford/70s type wide.

Ralph Lauren seems to have some nice polo suits that fit me very nicely OTR, but they also have 4"+ lapels or so, looks a bit 70s to me. I'm a fan of wide peak lapels, but not really sure if this look will look...dated?

I'm old enough to remember the seventies and I never want to go there again. I don't understand the love they get on here but I prefer not to wear jackets with the slightest memory of Richard Nixon.

I've fallen out of favor with the wide lapels. I have both an RL Purple label and a Blue Label with them. They don't get any wear anymore.

Most of the pictures in the thread so far are not 4" lapels - they are much more unless the models are like size 30 chest. I think 4" is fine if you have 42"+ chest. There are various rules of thumb but I think as long as they do not exceed half your chest you are fine. If, on the other hand, you need to pin them to your sleeve to stay in place, you may have gone too far.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't bigger lapel suits a person who has a bigger built? Therefore, smaller lapels gives a slimmer silhouette.

There may be an element of age here. I don't think guys over a certain age look good in skinny lapels so they should logically wear wider lapels (within reason). Also - sometimes (as Parker notes) variety is a good thing.

I'd rather have too wide than too narrow -- but either extreme pushes ridiculousness. I like my lapels slightly wide. I wear a 36 R, though, so 3.5"-3.75" is the sweet spot for me. The only jackets I see that wear really wide lapels well also have really high gorges -- which has a dramatic effect on how wide the lapel appears.

I have like 5" lapels on an overcoat, and that's awesome.

+1 The large lapels make me think of old man clothes.
