I'm looking to dip my toes into more high-end knitwear (coming from uniqlo, oscar jacobsen, a day's march and such), but I am struggling a bit where the crossover point is from getting merino wool to when it's worth it going for cashmere.

Some brands I have been looking at are that seem to fit my personal budget:

- John Smedley
- Luca Faloni
- William Lockie
- Pini Parma
- SuitSupply
- Asket
- Cavour

I'm curious to what you prefer to wear and how you feel about merino vs cashmere at around this price point, so what are you wearing and what are some obvious brands that I missed?

Rubato has some excellent knitwear. Vintage inspired with a boxier and shorter cut (works great with high rise trousers, for example).

The strong dollar also means these are pretty good values right now too. Under $200 for the standard crewnecks.

A couple of Cable knit crews in Angora wool which are very appropriate for
the mild winters and cool evenings in the SF Bay Area. They are from the
Andover Shop and no longer listed on their site. Also a cable knit crew about
25 years old from now gone Carroll and company. Wheat colored Donegal knit.
Innis Mean crew silk and linen bluish grey. Finally, my favorite, not a crew, but
a heavy burnt orangish Vee neck "hunting sweater' w/o shoulder patches
from Holland and Holland before they became polluted by the fashionista
aesthetic.

I wear Asket for most my knitwear. Their quality / price is very good, and the sizing system with 15 different sizing options (short, regular, long) works for me very well.

Fine lambswool knit in burnt orange from Gran Sasso, bought on eBay for a steal (something like 15€). Sold as used but probably never worn (I found the QC label still inside).
I love the colour since that purchase, and the wool is so fine that I don't miss merino wool (maybe it is merino actually, not specified).
That knit has sparked my passion for Gran Sasso knits and I have been hunting for deals on them ever since (I have 5 pieces now)

John Smedely and William Locke. Particularly the William Locke for Frans Boone using Loro Piana wool are something else. 30 gauge knitwear is sublime, very light, warm, yet not too hot. SuitSupply is not a bad option, but runs very slim, like all of their garments.
