What's the perfect Tie width-Lapel-Chest ratio?

It's reasonable that one's chest size should corresponds with the width of the lapel, and the width of the lapel determines the width of the tie.

Thus, a small chested man wearing a 3.5inch lapel and tie would appear even smaller; a broad-bodied lad with a skinny tie and lapel seems. The overall proportion needs to sync.

But does anyone have thoughts to what the ideal ratio should be?

For ex:

Chest 37---> Ideal Lapel width ----> 2 3/4----->thus ideal tie width 2 1/2?

Im not so sure about this. I am skinny and I have some wide lapelled jackets. I look great in them if I do say so myself

I don't like to stick to the small tie small lapel rule. Obviously I wouldn't wear D&G or Dior thin lapels with a full sized tie, but even just a slim lapel on most suits still look good for a medium to full width tie.

+1

I dont tend to notice any proportions. I notice the collar of the shirt compared with the tie much more.

I was always taught that the knott and width of the tie shoudl be proportionate to the width of the shirt collar. the more more space between the wings the bigger the knott should be.

Doc's recommendation makes sense to me and is pretty much what I follow.
