what's the most elitist sport for least money?

I was going through an estate sale a few days ago and I saw a gold Swiss clock made by Gubelin with the following engraving on the top: Dave Perry, Host of the year, (local city) Yacht Club. So the guy got a fancy clock for throwing parties? That to me sounds like an exclusive past time. But for those of us small-timers, what sport can I join that gives away fancy clocks for least money spent/ time involvement?

Fencing - all you need is a foil and a dream. There's so few people doing it, the worst fencer is the world is probably ranked 20th.

Ever been to a chess club? You're not going to find gold clocks anywhere, let alone someone who'd likely read this forum. You will find very smart, borderline autistic adults, many of whom may still live with their parents.

Given there is zero luck involved in chess and there's a whole mess of very smart people playing, it can deliver massive blows to egos the likes of which few other competitions can. There's a larger history of mental illness associated with competitive chess than any other competition man has devised.

How many grand masters have freaked out over the years? I'm sure Bobby Fisher got invited to a few parties back in the day, but now he's busy talking to himself and getting put on no-fly lists.
