What's the deal with the soft cotton RL Polo's?

Ok, so I've got a few of these RL polos with a real soft cotton (says 100% cotton - maybe Pima??), but I was wondering what the deal with these were. I wore one of these shirts ONCE and pretty much had these ugly little cotton balls forming on the back and the fabric started to look very worn. While I have these other RL shirts that are a much thicker cotton (pretty much the same material as most other polos) and they're fine.
Why do those soft cotton ones wear so easily? is there any way to prevent this? What happens when they get washed?

Sorry I wasn't able to explain this well, but I hope you guys got the gist of what i was trying to say.
Thanks.

They're available at every Ralph Lauren store I've ever been to.
There's always a huge section of them.

ok so can anyone reply? what happens when you wash them? Why do they accumulate so much of these little cotton balls on the back even after the first wear? I've got other RL polos that are in great shape after being worn for years.
