I'm heading back from Mexico in a few days and want to bring an assortment of bottles of liquor with me. What would be the best way to bring them back without either a)getting hit with customs fees, or b)getting in trouble with the airline/customs? Should I buy a case of something? Smuggle them in my bag? Suggestions are welcome. I'd like to get around 7-8 bottles, so bringing them in my bag isn't exactly the best option, but I could do it if I need to.

I came back from Barbados with a bunch of bottles in my luggage...

Nothing happened but that only works for so many bottles.

Get a wine shipper, pack them in there and check them through as a piece of luggage.

Is what I was planning. I'll just pay for the extra piece with Spirit. But what happens when I get to customs?

thankfully, I am no longer large enough to accommodate that type of carry on baggage.

pretty much a hit or miss if you try to sneak it in, bro.... tons of people do that, and from what I know u.s. customs tend to just look the other way unless the quantity's really huge. but then it only takes one asshole to stop you and make you pay a hefty fine for bringing them in undeclared. so if you declare them, do you have to pay a huge amount to bring them in or something?

I believe you can bring back 1.5 liters of liquor. Anything more is going to get taxed (assuming you do it all on the up and up). Not sure how much tax you'd pay for 4-6 extra bottles. If you do get caught, the fines will be a lot more than just paying the taxes though. I had some food in my bag that, unknowingly, was prohibited in the US and the agent was threatening me with a $300 fine. Ended up just letting me go through without my food, though.

I decided against even bothering with it. Just seemed like too much of a hassle.
