What's more versatile for a white oxford ****, button down collar or otherwise?

I have an excuse to buy a brooks brother black fleece white oxford shirt. This is going to be my goto shirt for a while, and I'm going to love the hell out of it

What's more versatile? A button down collar or not. I'm going to be wearing this casually a lot, but I'd like to pull it out for something formal every now and then.

am I asking too much from this one shirt? Or no?

Yes. Save money, don't go black fleece, and get a normal button down and a spread collar.

but spread collar for casual wear, sometimes I feel just wants a tie.

really i'm just collecting opinions and thoughts to help me decide

I'd say that a button down collar is rather casual and not very versatile if you want to wear it for more formal occasions. Button down collar are considered (at least in Europe) quite informal but it looks great with a pair of jeans or a chino. It seems to be "socially acceptable" to wear a tie with a button down collar in the US, so go for it.

Unless you're rocking the "Trad" look, a button down collar and suit don't really go, though it's a great look with odd jackets and trousers. On the other hand, I wouldn't be caught dead in a white point collar oxford in anything but a suit. So the button down is probably _more_ versatile, but I don't really see them as fungible in anything but the broadest sense (ie they keep your upper body covered).

It sounds like you want a reason to spend a lot of money on a shirt. I say go to a RL or Jcrew sale and buy a shirt from them for $40-70 (Jcrew non sale is about 70). Get it well tailored for another $30 and you will love it just the same.

Just get a regular (point collar) by black fleece and you're good to go. If I were you I'd just get something like band of outsiders for casual wear and a crisp white shirt from a more traditional maker you only bring out for formal events.

The button down oxford is the epitome of white ****.

Be aware that getting one 'go to' shirt and wearing the hell out of it will mean the shirt will not last long. Buy more of a cheaper brand even if you get multiples of the same shirt. Often 3 BB oxfords will cost only a few bucks more than one Black Fleece oxford.

+1 on buying more shirts with that money. No matter how great the fabric and construction is, if you have only one go-to shirt, it won't last long.

I was assuming, who doesn't do a point collar? Ok I guess black fleece might not. Why not get Jil Sander or something like that anyway...
