What's a fair price for a good Oxxford suit?

Your informed opinions sought....

A few months ago I bought (for a song) a mint condition Oxxford suit at a local thrift store. My intention was to give the suit to my father, unfortunately it didn't fit him at all.

A friend of mine is interested in the suit, and despite my best efforts, he won't let me just give it to him (he's older, and very very comfortable financially). He insists on paying a "fair market price" i.e. what I could get for it if I sold it to a stranger. I've accepted this, and truthfully could use the money (moving and starting new college soon), but don't want to feel like I'm overcharging anyone.

Can anyone help me with a ballpark figure here?
It's a nice gray flannel suit, with a very subtle blue windowpane, 3-button, perfect condition.
(I realize this is a bit useless without pictures)

How recent? Oxxford performs poorly on eBay. If you start low, it will probably sell low. I've seen plenty of older stuff go for less than $50. Of course, if the suit's of recent vintage and you had a dummy, good feedback and great pics, you might get more. But you're probably looking at topping out at no more than about $250, unless you just got lucky.

I'd say your friend could give you an even $100 (which is about three or four times what it would cost at a thrift shop).

Thanks!
I'm a bit surprised, I must admit when I bought the suit I didn't know Oxxford's price point, and after seeing what they go for retail I probably would haveasked for too much.

Irrelevant anyways since they suit didn't fit him.

Still, appreciate the input.

Here's what Oxxford suits have sold for on Ebay recently.

If you cull out the "Tom James by Oxxford" which is BS, I think you'll see that the nicer used Oxxford suits go for considerably more than $50, unless you get very lucky!

Here's a used 48L Oxxford suit that went for $355. And it has the "classic" Oxxford awning lining indicating that it's not of recent vintage.

There is definitely a knowledgeable segment of the Ebay buying public that knows and follows Oxxford.

I'm small shouldered and very conservative and I love Oxxford to this day.

This is the single best thing I've learned from the internet all month! Thanks!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
