I always pack WAY too many books. Every vacation I think I am going to be some kind of reading machine, but then I just fall asleep on the train/airplane/bus.

btw, does anyone have advice on packing shoes? I am usually afraid my dress shoes will get damaged in my luggage.

Depends on where I'm going and the season.

For palm springs this hot ass memorial day weelend I'll probably pack in the Y's duffle:

polo sport trunks (old skoo)
two jil wife beats
raf s/s linens
comme shorts
damir shorts
rick cut off Ts
dries cotton pants
jil dove grey pants
white court shoes
raf navy patent hitops

I'd always underpack before, now I overpack so I have choices instead of being limited. Usually a small duffle just for shoes too.

hah- but for real when I pack for a 2-3 day trip by car

I bring

2 pair pants (1 jean/ 1 trouser)
scrub pants, v-necks for sleep
chucks, wingtips
1 dress shirt,1 tie
flannel denim western-or- chambray
cardigan or sweatshirt
dopp kit
bible- 2,3 magazines to read when everyone else is asleep
camera
chewing gum- altoids

I hang up everything that I am worried about wrinkling and put the rest in my crappy-ass jansport back-pack. If I fly I have a duffle I use.
I have been keeping my eyes peeled for RED samsomite or american tourister luggage or a Std. issue laundry bag, but all I find at garage sales, thrift stores is too much IMO.

Also really liked that blog post for some reason...

For me, assuming im going somewhere hot and cold;

beat as **** adidas rod lavers
raf hitops
black cheap mondays
junya shorts
lightweight raf ss08 pants
jil charcoal knit
nice collective sweat moto
red gingham h&m
cdg x fred perry polo
3-4 t's

probably covers my basics well... add my n(n) flannel when it comes.

edit: probably also black cashmere j.crew cardigan for annoying inbetween temps

Good post, I'm the world's worst packer as I alwasy tend to overpack on trips because I'm never qutie sure what I'll need to wear when I arrive.

For a weekend trip I end up packing like 4 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of jeans, etc etc. It's good that i have choice but half of it never gets worn, I really need to get the hang of this. For my next short trip I'll take a picture of what goes into my army duffle and see if I can do any better.

You can't pack for cold or hot--there are totally different types of cold and hots so it depends on the actual desitnation and the function of your trip.

+1. Otherwise, this turns into "What are the favorite items in my wardrobe" or "What are my 10 essentials." I want to know what you actually packed dammit...and take a picture or it didn't happen.

I have to travel on a lot of 2-5 day trips for work and I generally always bring the same thing:

shoulder bag:
-laptop/camera/mediaplayer - and their accessories, along with my work material
-itinerary
-mints, gum, aspirin

Luggage bag (I never check my bags, I only carry-on)
-enough socks and underwear for every day, plus 2 extra days worth
-enough tshirts for every day, plus 1-2 extra
-enough buttondowns/longsleeves for every day, plus 1-2 extra
-1 blazer
-1 jacket/coat (when applicable)
-1 pair of dress shoes (usually black AE's)
-1 pair of semi-casual boots (usually chelseas)

These days, carrying toothpaste, mouthwash, etc... on a plain is too much of a hassle so I just buy this stuff at the hotel and bill it to the company.
