1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

Nothing much from the entire family side other than dinner. I've worked as a research monkey to fund myself thus far and I don't see much change going forward. I did get fantastic farewell sex from old college gf and casual fuck buddy the night after graduation. [IMG] Then she moved across country day later. [IMG]

I got some money from family members, but my parents gave me my security deposit for my first apartment when I got my job. They also bought me a TV, home theater system and furniture. I considered myself very lucky and was very happy with it all.

Oh yeah, they paid for my college too. Nice.

Nice. Zero debt here as well. I can't imagine how shitty it must feel to have 200K in debt.. ugh.

Well, I have more than that in debt at the moment. I took out a mortgage.

I got lunch at a restaurant of my choosing when I finished undergrad. I got the same gift (different restaurant) when I finished graduate school. I was satisfied with those gifts.

When my wife finished undergrad (we didn't know each other at the time), she got a new car, and her parents paid for her apartment for a year and furnished it for her (and they also paid for her tuition too so she had no debt). And she also had a great job lined up within a few weeks of graduation. Some people just win the genetic lottery. Her gift from her parents when she finished grad school was much less extravagant: a pen/pencil set and a nice shoulder bag.

    +1.

College graduation irks me, almost as much as high school graduation. College graduation is not an accomplishment. It takes effort to flunk out of college. I don't expect a reward for passing a bunch of classes and drinking for four years. It is just such an overcelebrated, fake event that it just makes me feel uncomfortable.

    agreed.

my parents fully expected I would graduate college (which isn't very difficult) and go to grad school shortly thereafter.

A degree with no college debt. I can't imagine how I could expect anything else on top of that.

I didn't expect anything for college graduation, but got it anyway.

I don't remember getting anything for my PhD, but I sure as hell didn't expect anything. I'll report back in a few weeks about my wife, her parents LOOOOVE giving crazy fucking gifts (five figure wedding present) so I imagine she'll get something bonkers for her PhD.

Do you find it's common for most PhDs that get married to end up with other PhDs as well?

Well, I mostly know younger PhDs, and then established ones in their 40-50s. The younger ones are almost exclusively with other high performers (MDs, lawyers, PhDs, etc), simply because of the demands of the lifestyle. It's hard to explain to someone with a normal job why you need to roll back out to the lab at midnight. I can't say about the people who get married to someone they met after grad school, because I haven't seen it happen yet

The older generation (my boss, etc) seem to be married mostly to saints.
