What were you doing July 12, 2005?

I bet some of us have come a long way since then. I was in London, the psychological effects of the bombings still lingering, having my first SR bespoke experience, and that night, saw Talking to Terrorists play at the Royal Court Theatre. At the post-performance discussion with the actors, director, and playwright, I distinctly recall a Palestinian, an Israeli, a stodgy Tory, two Americans, and a Chinese offering polite, thoughtful, and civilised questions and receiving similarly dignified and sometimes provocative responses. It occurs to me that five days after 9/11, the same would not have happened - the play would likely not have even run - in New York.

But this isn't meant to be political. I'm just interested in how much, or little, circumstances have changed for each of us in this eight month void.

i can't even remember back that far. having kids has destroyed some of my memory cells.

*edit: not to imply that we've had kids since july...just that the past 2-3 years are a little blurry.

Back in July, SF was just something this guy I know spent a lot of time perusing (Tom.) Since then I've come to understand his addiction(? is that what you'd call it?) a little better and have started to get in on the action myself.

In July, I had just found out the UN cancelled the project I was going to be working on Haiti (tsk, tsk, let a few kidnappings scare them ...) and was trying to figure out what in the world to do with myself this year.

Since then, I've moved to China, found a job in India, and Haiti has had (semi-successful) elections!

I was working at a summer internship and taking summer classes. Was also just starting to date a new girlfriend.

I was pretty miserable in my job, and somewhat poor because I had just moved. Since then, new job and a raise, probably staying in the same apt for a second year for the first time... ever.

The day after *****cat's 35th birthday and 44 days into my first full-time employment in my second career as a translator/editor (and now interpreter

) in the chemical industry (!) commuting daily on the Tokyo subways. Nobody's forgotten the sarin gas attack by Aum Shinrikyo, but frankly we're all far more scared of earthquakes, and rightly so.
