Kind of like Ben Affleck’s The Accountant isn’t anything like a real accountant’s life. It’s just sitting in meetings and staring at spreadsheets.
With guns, right? Spreadsheets and guns.

This show is damn funny, and it's unfortunate it didn't catch on.

Almost done with S2 of The Diplomat - every new development has made it more crazy, to the point that it's ridiculous now (if it wasn't already).

Not the books thread but what didn't you like about The Expanse book series?
I thought the story was interesting, but the writing was pretty bad. It felt like they intended it to be a screenplay from the beginning. For instance, a lot of characters initially came across as if they were casting descriptions, rather than an attempt to develop three dimensional book characters. The series was fine, but they just didn't feel like the kind of books that should be nominated for Hugo awards. After I finished them, I have no desire to ever read them again. I'll concede that my perception is likely colored by the fact that I watched the show first, and loved it intensely, so mentally I was always comparing the two, which is unfair.

As for Silo, if I recall correctly, it was the author's first book, and it was self published on Amazon as a serial. I thought it started out great, but sort of fell apart as it progressed. I got the distinct impression the author didn't really know where he was going with it, and if it had been written as a complete novel with professional editing, it might've held together better. I haven't seen the show yet, but I expect one of the reasons it's good is because they have the luxury of picking and choosing from the whole run of books and/or short stories he wrote afterwards.

I don't think that's it (haven't started S2 yet though).

Somewhere up thread you can find my thoughts on S1 vs listening to the audiobook. I stopped the audiobook exactly where S1 finished because I wasn't really loving it and didn't want it to spoil the show for me.

I would say that from a plot perspective, S1 follows the book very closely. I believe they make it just past the end of the third novella. So its not really a "pick and choose" as they keep the story together.

It is all about the exposition and storytelling. Your comment about him being a first-time self-published author makes a lot of sense...because his core story and characters are pretty good, but the way he structures the story and reveals information leaves a lot to be desired. The way the story is told in the TV show is much more engaging, suspenseful, and mysterious--which is something that a more experienced author (and/or someone with a good editor pushed by the publisher) would have figured out how to accomplish.

It's ril good...

I've been wanting a new spy show, and saw Fassbender was in a new one.
3 minutes in, I said WTF, paused, and googled "is The Agency a remake of The Bureau?"
Answer: yes. So that's off my list. The Bureau is a perfect show that needs no remake.

I just found "Condor" from a few years ago. I'm liking it so far.

Not a spy thriller exactly but I'm enjoying The (new) Day of the Jackal. A new season coming 2025. Wife's family plot line is kinda annoying but doesn't eat up tooo much screen time

Never watched the Bureau so I may give the Fassbender version a shot.

Good to hear. I see there are a bunch in the queue so that'll be a good Xmas break show.

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
