After all the recent posts on spectators I am interested in purchasing a pair.
My question is what do I wear them with ?

I wear a suit or sports jacket every day, and my workplace is not conservative.
Is there anway to wear them to work without looking like I am peddling flesh on the dark side of town ?

Apart from old time hollywood actors and Raj from the apprentice I rarely see anyone wearing them.

If you work at Churchill Downs or Palm Beach Polo Club, no sweat... Otherwise? I think perhaps your fear of perception might be accurate.

Gotta disagree with Carlo here. I wore a pair with a beige, almost cream Armani suit to work. Was I out of place? Probably, but I really didn't care. A co-worker in his uniform, i.e. Dockers, oxford button down RL Polo shirt, rep tie and rubber soled black shoes, made a wise-guy comment. I just smiled and said that spectator shoes reveal a man of taste. The fashion editor, who was walking by at that moment, went ga ga over my shoes, hence proving my point on the spot.

Interestingly, at the time I lived in an apartment next door to the Palm Beach Polo Club.

Spectators are casual shoes for weekends and sporting events.

Spectators are casual shoes ? I guess it's a no go for work.

Can they be worn year round ?

I saw Raj wearing them with orange cords, smashing look .

Red - Please note that my answer was in response to "are they appropriate for business"

...don't confuse that with the more broad question: Should you give a flip whether or not they are 'appropriate' for business.

...depends on whether you want to go for PROPER or if you are looking to express yourself with your footwear :)

Quirky is not automatically bad :)

Some of my co-workers think I am a clown for wearing tan shoes with dark grey suits. I can only imagine the looks I would get wearing specs ...... I can't wait [IMG]

    :)

Give'm hell, wear them with sheer confidence and see how long before someone imitates you. The trick to wearing anything 'risky' is to wear it like you own it.

...Kabbaz pulls off spectators with a pink shirt and chalkstripe suit for cryin out loud - only because he has that air of "I know exactly what I'm doing".

Attitude is the best accessory (after a great tie of course)

Poor Manton, this may kill him.

No way, dude. Getcherfaks straight. That was a coral pink shirt.

Andyway, nobody saw. They were all out in your room looking at the damn ties.

Funny that, the Palm Beach Polo Club is not actually in Palm Beach...

    Jon.

(to be honest not that many very well dressed people in PB anymore, sad really...)

Actually Alex they weren't looking for ties, they were looking for sunglasses... but since we didn't have any they figured it was safer fro their vision to hang out with us in the front.

Since your workplace is "not conservative," I say, "Go for it." I wear spectators and bucks as seasonally appropriate (summer and unseasonably warm days). They are best worn with light colored slacks. I get a lot of attention when I wear them to my disgustingly too-casual office, but none it is negative.

Jlib - Unless I have you confused with another JLibourel... don't you have a gun collection that would more or less preclude those with a reasonably healthy self preservation instinct from saying a darned thing bout your shoes?

    :)

    ...Sir?

Wellington. It's also getting a bit run down from what I hear.

I've worn a pair to the office on occasion, typically with a very light grey gabardine suit from the 1950s. It's a look best for those days when your calendar is devoid of meetings.
