what to wear with cavalry twill trouser?

I am thinking about buying a pair of tan cavalry trousers (from cordings, picadilly) and wanted some advice about what to wear with with them. Is this trouser seen as less dressy and therefore smart casual? Would it be wrong to wear a tie with trousers like this?

Any advice or pics would be great. Thanks.

I think that they are "smart casual" - traditionally worn with tweed jackets - and of course with a tie.

Correct.
Also go with a blue blazer.

Cavalry twill in earth tones are so very versatile. I agree with all advice given above and to add, enjoy all of your non-black shoes with these.

I bought a pair of beige cavalry twills from Cording's two years ago and donated them to charity the other week. They are not ment to be worn post 1955.

I really wanted to like them, but the too strong diagonal structure in the twill made them difficult to match. It also made me look like the German teacher I had in the 80s and he looked antiquated already then.

With a navy, wool SC it could be done, but there are so many better alternatives out there and I don't agree that they are versatile at all.

What we all probably can agree on is that it is impossible to wear them out. Some may think it's because of the strong fabric, but for me it was because they are never worn.

Don't buy them on-line (where they look much better than "IRL" "IMO"). Go to the shop and have a thorough look at them first.

yes they are definately very old school .. although sometimes this isnt a bad thing!

erpet, i'll definately have a closer look in cordings, i was hoping they would be a versatile and tough trouser for daytime wear. my standby look is usually cream or khaki chinos (with a navy or azure blue sports coat, light blue button down shirts and brown shoes most of the time), what would you suggest instead of these trousers? im not really a jeans man .. but like a smart casual look ..

As versatile as grey flannel trousers. I.e. they go with mostly anything. Reminds me, I must find out where I've misplaced mine.

general approval does seem to be there by SFs .. think i'll get down to cordings and try a pair on with a navy blazer ..

there is a definate gap in the wardrobe in the smart casual dept between the chino and the flannel trouser .. you need something inbetween which is smart enough to go out to restaurants and so on in but also fairly hardwearing to be able to go to the park or sit outside ..

to settle this i think we need some pictures with cavallry trousers in an overall outfit ..

also any ideas on choice of shoes with cavalry trousers .. would suede shoes work .. possibly double monks or is this too modern with such a conservative trouser? brown or black?

Brown rather than black. Suede (i.e. desert or chukka boots) are classic with these trousers, which may be conservative but are not formal.

It depends on the styling of the loafer. My concern would be the twill possibly overpowering the loafer. May we see photos?
