Hi I have a navy blue suit, and I was looking for ideas with regards to what colour shirt to wear and what what colour shoes would go with it. i have an idea of a baby blue shirt, and some dark brown shoes. Would either the baby blue or dark brown work with a navy suit?

Thanks,

Your pale blue shirt and brown shoes will work well here. That's about as safe as it gets.

Navy and black just doesn't seem to work, Black and royal blue sit nicely but anything darker than 'prussian blue' begins to look too close to black to clash, but too far to match- just doesn't work for me. Black goes with shades of gray, and strong colours. Navy is too chromatically weak to roll with black- for a shoe it's hardly a deal breaker, but for a colour scheme in general, it's not good

and it has that whole 'you look like a bruise' thing going on

There's one thing that's true about colour theory whether you apply it to painting, to design, or to your wardrobe -- if the contrast is unclear or confusing to the eye, it's visually unpleasant. That's the problem with black and navy. They're so close that they almost look like a matching error. Slightly lighter blues, such as Air Force blue, work just fine.

I think the issue of brown shoes looking better than black shoes with navy is more or less settled science. A while back I referred to anyone who wears black shoes with a navy suit as "a filthy pigf**ker", and exactly two (2) people objected. One was a flaming effete old fop and the other was from Toronto. Enough said.
