Professional school ball, last year I wore a suit, but that suit is way too small. I have a suit separate jacket that is a little bigger but still tight. What do you guys think? Suit vs Cardigan, and lavender tie vs blue tie?

And charcoal gray pants vs black pants?

If money is tight, just don't button the jacket. The cardigan looks a little like Mr. Roger's neighborhood.

None of the above. Go thrifting. Or take out more loans

The cardigan above is a medium. I exchanged it for a large after taking the pics so it won't be as tight

Go to some thrift stores and find a decent suit. Take it to an alterations tailor and slim the sleeves, body and trousers for cheap.

I haven't been to a ball in ages in anything less than white tie and tails. I guess we don't move in the same circles (or at least we don't go to the same balls).

So I guess it depends on what the invitation says, as well as what other guests will be wearing.

I would suggest black pants. A "ball" is usually attended in white tie and suits with "tails" so I would not bring any new colors. I would stick to black or white for all your clothing items.
