Greetings,
I'm browsing ebay for a Blazer/Jacket and apparently have no clue what brand, design to look for and what to avoid.
Looking for a light brown, tan, grey, navy or plaid,42L, budget is ~$50.
I bought a Harris Tweed last week that fits me good for 35.
Please advise.
Thanks, G.

You're the same size as me.

Try to get used Oxxford, Southwick, Hickey Freeman. Not sure if you can get it in the under $50.00 price range.

I would look at one thing at a time. You have listed alot of colours and patterns.

Maybe just start looking at Navy Blazer first. Light Brown second, etc until you have build an adequate collection.

As for style, you can't go wrong with non vented, double vented or single vented jacket. 2 or 3 button. There are fit issues, perhaps you could try a similar brand in a store to get the basic fit.

Post your intended purchases on the forum and members should be able to give you advice before you spend your money.

Exactly!! I think Gordon is being a bit too general and will need to narrow down what he wants to get.

triple-vented is quite popular where I come from, but it can be a toiugh look to pull off, so I wouldn't call it a "can't go wrong" choice.

happy holidays, Gordon!
OK, here are a couple of ideas. Got as close to your proposed budget as possible, but all are a little over budget (but worth it, i think!!)-- problem is, $50 is a tough pricepoint to find jackets with double vents, or at least single vents. I hate non-vented jackets.

here is a GREAT looking sportcoat, which you might be able to buy for a very reasonable price. I would wear this with brown trousers, white shirt, brown tie-- or with jeans and a white shirt, also. REALLY good looking jacket, i think:

I like this one a lot, nice example of an Oxxford classic sportcoat-- over what you wanted to spend ($175), but I would wear this with all kinds of things-- greyish blue flannel trousers, nice blue jeans, etc.

Suit you might consider, also:
This looks like a nice one, for about $300. Zegna made it for the retail store, so it actually was priced about $1200 I'm betting (not the higher price quoted by the seller)

Thanks Gentlemen,
Here is the pic of the Harris Tweed I bought, just dropped it off at the tailor to shorten the sleeves.

And here are my findings so far:

Seller says it's 10 years old but brand new? (The BB)

some shoes:

The Southwick has a greenish tint in the picture, I guess the camera's whitebalance was off, checked MCClallen today, they carry Southwick.
So what do you think?
Thanks for your time.

One thing you must do is to know what measurements you need. Not every 42L will be the same.

I would look for Hart Schaffner and Marx at that price range too. I have picked up at least 3 or 4 for that price (including one full suit). They are nicely made and can actually be had for that price.

Bob is right: check the measurements, as suits will vary. Look for a good fit in the chest and shoulders. The waist and sleeves are not hard to alter.
I like the Southwick suits; the glenplaid jacket looks like it might be a suit orphan.
To get a sense for the wear on the shoes, you could ask the seller for a picture w/o the shoes trees in place.

and his mother paid over $800 for a Brooks Brothers 346 (factory store line) sportcoat...and its "still in the bag" (though there's no bag in sight of any of the photos)...
another valuable lesson learned: most of what sellers write is nonsense or worse, try to deal with people who are direct with the facts.

I only recall seeing one in Gangs of New York worn by DiCaprio.
