what to do when you get fat?

    Throughout college I was a S/48/sz30, now I have graduated to M/50/32.

    Should i just sell everything?

    A series reply: if you're in your 20s to mid 30s, there's no reason you can't be in a good physical state. Adjust your diet accordingly, and exercise routinely. Once you get the ball rolling, it becomes a habit.

    All kidding aside, the only thing I ever had luck with was a keto diet (low carb, high fat). I've lost 45 lbs in 13 weeks, and I'm eating filling foods so I'm not forever hungry and feeling the desire to "cheat" on this diet. Breakfast is sausage/bagon and eggs, lunch is a big salad with turkey or chicken (but I often skip lunch), dinner is a protein plus veggies. Even with higher fat/calorie meals, my total caloric intake is much lower than on other diets because I'm always full and therefore don't snack/graze. Prior to keto I kept gaining weight, even though I don't do fried food or fast food (microbrews are my kryptonite).

    Oh, and save your skinny clothes. I'm now fitting into mine again, and it feels great. On the flipside, I've given away all my fat-guy clothes, as I'm never going back there again.


    Edit: Wife is a nurse (RN) studying to be a Nurse Practitioner, and she researched the diet before I went on it. She's now also on it, even though she's at a healthy weight, and says she's never felt better (no energy spikes/crashes because of glycemic spikes). My doc is amazed at my progress and blood levels are vastly improved. I was 250 and am now 205....I started July 1st.

    besides a combination of diet and exercise, what also helps is to have a visual that can keep you motivated in your goal. For me, for example, I have an Abercrombie image that I look at to keep my eyes on the price :)

    i'm 23 now and only a few pounds more than i was in college, but nothing fits anymore. i may still be growing, i guess =/ (is that what you mean?)

    While this may sound repetitive from what other members have stated above, diet and exercise goes hand in hand. Both start with discipline, which means you'll have to adjust your lifestyle behavior. Your body does mature as you age, at the same time, shocking your body with different workouts (cardio, lifting, sports) with a healthy diet will do wonders for you. How active is your lifestyle at the moment?

    don't let yourself go - getting back in shape is 100 times harder than keeping yourself in shape.

    that said, you don't have to hold the line where you were at 18. you can find a resonable position that you can hold for 20 years or more.

    read a little about a few diets that might fit you - paleo, okinawa plan, men's health T plan, the zone, stuff like that. find something that fits you. ditto an excersize plan - you can stick to one thing, jogging, swimming, cross fit, boxing etc or you coould mix it up - one day run, one day cross fit, one day box, etc.

    you don't need to go crazy, but if you set yourself some limits - never eat fried food or no bread or pasta, or no more than 2 beer in a day, or something more structured, and you do 3-5 hours of excersize a week, you can hold the line for 20 years.


    but, yes, otherwise, toss out your old clothing

    RE: Diets, the thing is that diets are not sustainable. It is more of a lifestyle change. I was chubby throughout middle, and high school at 180 lbs. I got really big in undergrad at 220 lbs. I put in work and dropped to about 140 lbs within 2 years. That was too thin for me. I'm at about 155 lbs now, been sustaining for 3 years now. Height is 5'9'' to put in perspective.
