This is no major revelation, but I got to thinking that trying to evoke the feel of the past is at the root of much of our love for clothing, hence the emphasis placed on vintage items, art deco design, skinny ties, and the like. As for myself, I idealize the 60s and 70s, despite having no recollection of them. My influences are principally movies like The Apartment, The French Connection and Munich, but also TV shows like Mad Men. The 60s evoke a kind of minimalist formality expressed in straight lines, narrow silhouettes and simple colour schemes (predominantly grey, or maybe I just think that because so much of the film was in black & white).
The seventies strike me as more casual. Still the slim fits, but more earth-tones, and less suiting (or at least less that I care to remember).
So, am I idealizing something that doesn't exist, or only exists in film? Does it matter? What are your historical influences?
