Hey guys I've never owned a tie or a suit since I never had a need for one. Now that I'm a freshman in univ I'm getting involved in politics and I'm going to a 3 day politics meeting with a lot of important people. It's going to be official and everyone who is actually in politics are going to wear a suit. People like me can get away with a dress shirt/tie. Now my questions is what tie should I get, that goes with this shirt. XXXXXXX I'm 5'9 average build. I was thinking of something like this? Anyway I'll probably buy something on ebay as it's cheaper but could you please recommend a size and colour/design? I'm totally new to this and the only thing I have in mind is that it should contrast the yellow and maybe a design that makes it stand out since my pants/shirt are plain. Also what do you think of an idea to get a RL tie that has RL logos on it as a design so it contrasts the polo guy logo on the shirt? Thanks

Given the event, I'd wear something abit more conservative. Maybe starting with a white shirt and stripe tie? Better yet wear a suit

I agree that repp stripes would compliment that shirt. With a yellow shirt like the one you showed, I would go with a navy and green repp. I find that these colors generally compliment yellow.

Sorry what does repp mean? slightly slanted downwards stripes? And what size tie do I need? Any difference at all?

For a three day event, I would want more than one shirt if possible. I would suggest for your next two shirts that you get one in white and on in light blue.

Don't be as concerned with the label on the back of the tie (the brand) as the pattern on the front. To see some striped ties that I like, go to:

http://jpressonline.com/neckwear.php

If you like the ones with two colors and stripes that are about 1/2 inch, they are often called University Stripes and you can find them at other sources on the net for under $25.00. Blue and some other color or green and some other color would go fine with your yellow shirt as would many other color combinations.

Around 57 inches is the standard length for ties. Some ties also come in long sizes of around 61 inches - that would be too long for you. Some young people like skinny ties. I expect that fashion will change in the future as it has a few times in the past. I would buy a tie that is from 3.25" to 3.75" in width.

If you need help in learning to tie a tie, you can find it on the net. Google is your friend. I suggest that you start with simple four-in-hand knot which may be the only one you will need. When tied properly the front blade of the tie should touch your belt buckle.

Many women seem to like clothing and handbags with designer's logos. I suggest that you avoid ties or other garments with logos.

Since you don't have a suit, it is nice that you can get by without one for this event. You should start thinking about getting a suit because someday you will need one and you don't want to have your options limited due to a lack of time.
The common wisdom is your first suit should be either Navy or Charcoal. I prefer the dark grey; probably more people prefer the dark blue - either is fine.

Press your shirt and enjoy your event, Jim.

Hey thanks for replying I'm sure to use your advice when I'll go buy a tie tommorow. The reason I wanted to get something like one of those ties was to stand out in a way that doesn't make me look like an underpayed low position accountant. But again perhaps striped ties that are well colour matched might stand out as well.

Navy with sky blue stripes would look good, I think.

This is quite unbeliebable, yesterday I went to moores (the only store focused on suits and formal wear) and got a tie stripes, navy blue/lighter blue/some red looks OK. The manager looked at me like I'm a psycho when I asked what size she'd recommend and of course they only carry the well known and respected "Joseph and Fiess" for a humble price of 35-55$. When i got home I found a lot of loose threads on the back so I think I'm going to just take it back.

Oh and when I asked if she knew a place where I could find a Brooks Brothers tie (I really liked one of their designs) she gave me a look like I'm asking for something made of gold. And this is happening at the capital of the second richest provice.

So far all my best purchases were made at a thrift store because even if you have no brain and want to buy extremely overpriced luxury brands in Canada (smaller market, smaller economy, bilingual labels, you know why...) and have the money you better hope you live in Toronto or Vancouver. I'm more and more inclined to get stuff online or just go down to the US for the weekend and do my shopping while I'm there.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
