I've posted something similar before, but I'm sorry, I simply can't seem to grasp what's good with ties, and this entire world of style is TOTALLY new to me anyway. Please be gentle.

I have two suits: One Navy and one medium gray.

I am going to be getting some ties; maybe some grenadine and repp, mostly solids with a few striped. Mostly going off of a good starting point I found elsewhere in the forum.

    1. Which colors should look good with navy?
    2. Which colors should look good with medium navy?
    3. Any colors that are terrible with either navy or medium gray?

Bonus question if anyone wants to offer up some info: I'm looking for an online place to get ties that are of decent/nice quality, but that aren't super expensive. Since I am starting completely fresh, with none, I'm hoping to be able to get good-ish ties for $50 and down... if that's even possible.

Thanks dudes! This forum is seriously awesome!

Red with white pin dots and blue with white pin dots are the most versatile. They will go with pretty much any suit and shirt combo.

A jacket with a tie in a very similar color (e.g., navy with navy) usually looks bad, and subtle patterns (such as tiny white dots) don't change that. Some people think red tie with navy suit looks contrived, but to each his own.

I do prefer burgundy over red with navy (and also grey). However, you should flip through the pages of the WAYWRN thread for ideas. It's full of them.

To get a sense of what color combos you like, you should follow the suggestion to browse WAYWRN and other threads here -- you will find lots of great combos in many different individual styles.

For the tie purchase, IMHO the only place to get good ties for <$50 is ebay or occasionally at places like Marshals, Nordstrom Rack, Off 5th etc. If you only need a couple of ties and know specifically what you want then I'd step up a bit in price and buy from Sam Hober, who offer impeccable fabrics and construction at good value. For example their classic Macclesfield silk ties start at $85. You can find many of their ties shown on SF, particularly in the Hober appreciation thread.

If you are not sure what you want or want more variety, then I'd try an ebay seller like bunny6972, who offers many Italian ties at very cheap prices. For $30 you could get 4-5 decent quality ties and then see what you like. These will be used and might have some odor of cologne or similar, but if you air them out or store them in cedar for a couple of weeks then they work fine. If you go even to ~$15 per tie then you will find a lot of selection. Decent brands you can normally find at good prices on ebay include Brooks Brothers Makers, Andrew's Ties, Luciano Barbera, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Massimo Bizzocchi, and sometimes English makers like Holland and Sherry, Turnbull and Asser, Charles Hill etc. Ties from specialized department stores like Barneys and Paul Stuart also offer good value. These are not the absolute top makers but to me are all very solid and should serve you well.
