I am 33 and a criminal law attorney in NYC. I need a new suit.

I'm 5'10", 180, 42R.

I'm new to this whole satorialist game but have been lurking on here for a almost a year now.

I am wondering what company I should look to in terms of buying a new suit in the 400-600 dollar range. I think - I mean I guess 800 if it's a knockout.

I currently own, (please be nice), suits from Bannna Republic, Hugo Boss, J.Crew and Theory for Men. I know those aren't the most praised brands on this site but they are well within my price range.

I like a modern, fitted/trim fit. The more conservative looks of Spoo/Phat Guido are always what blow me away but I'm sure I'm not alone there.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

$800 is not a big budget for a quality suit. You can get lucky scoring a quality suit (i.e. Zegna, Isaia, etc) off eBay or B&S if they have your size, but otherwise the best bet for you would be Brooks Brothers.

Spoo? Conservative? Don't know that I've heard him called that before!

Anyways, if you are comfortable ordering online, the Benjamin from eHaberdasher is nice--fully canvassed, really nice construction, and quite slim fitting. He should have them back in stock in a week or so. Otherwise, the BB in Fitzgerald fit is a nice suit.

Yes I know 800 is not that much. But it is what it is.

And ha yes I know Spoo is not conservative - I meant more the fit of his suits.

Im not sure if you mean conservative, or modern - I think most of my suits are a closer fit, less roomy - not really more conservative.

In any case, thanks for the compliment - I second a BB Fitz for you, and if you are in NY, check out C21 - they have some great suits by Valentino and Luciano Barbera (Club line) for $499 that will be perfect for what you need - a modern cut, nice fabrics, not a high price.

I say this regularly: I would think twice about a BB Fitz as the narrower lapels are a bit "of the moment." I own one Fitz and regret the purchase. I prefer the Regent line, and even the Madison, as both have wider lapels. Pleated trousers don't bother me, either, as I usually remove the belt loops and wear braces in pleated trou. The one Madison I own has side vents and is US made. My two Regents are made in Italy (as is the Fitz). I paid $400 for the Madison, $500 for each of the Regents and the Fitz -- I waited for a sale.

At that price point, if you have time to scour B&S, Ebay, etc., I'd look for Polo by Corneliani as well. I also have a Benjamin Sartorial, and while Ben is a total pleasure to deal with, I won't buy another. I feel like I can do better for $500 without alterations.
