What should I wear with my new cardigan?

I picked up a really nice black cashmere cardigan a few weeks ago. The fit is perfect; really slim and it ends just below my belt line. I'm not sure what to wear with it. I guess some would say I have a bit of a hipster look going on; longish bangs, dark framed glasses etc so I'm not really opposed to that look.

The other day I wore the cardigan with a lighter green henley shirt from American Apparel, darker blue jeans and classic chuck taylors. I really liked the look. I just haven't been able to find much else that works with it. I don't own much for polos because I find they make me look really geeky. I tried the cardigan with just a basic tshirt but it seemed to me like a cardigan is too dressy to wear with just a tshirt. Any suggestions would be great.

Personally, I like buttondown collar shirts with a cardigan. But if polos make you look "geeky" then the buttondown might be even worse. Or you could just accept and relish in your geekdom. I've never liked the tshirt/cardigan look.

as for underneath....jeans always give cardigans that lil "edge" to avoid looking like Mr Rogers, so that's what I stick to for trousers.

I am against the t-shirt/cardigan look as well.

Have you considered a western shirt?

Wear your sleek, dark cardigan with a brighter patterned shirt (button-down is indeed a good idea) and you're good to go, if it's too dorky for you then maybe it's the cardigan that's making you self conscious...If you're seriously hipsterish you could wear it with a graphic tee that looks cool when halfway hidden and a blazer.

To avoid the geek look, pair the button shirt with a tie.

Hey that's the shinsengumi guy from Rurouni Kenshin, he's a lot more interesting than the main char IMHO. Ok sorry for the off topic comment

I'd wear a crisp white shirt underneath that black cardigan. If it looks too glossy and clean, try a tanktop/wife-beater underneath the shirt and leave the shirt half open. Try to make the collar stay inside the cardigan otherwise it'll look a bit femme. Oh, test the cardy for lint first. Your shirt might end up covered in black lint.

Kenshin was too much of a wussy pacifist. Saito was just a badass dude who smokes, my kind of guy.

Cardigans walk the line between Kurt Cobain and Mr. Rogers. What other garment can one say that about?
