What Shoes To Wear With (Grey) Glen Plaid Slacks?

So I have a pair of glen plaid trousers that I want to wear casually. They are black and white, so grey, and I am wondering if I can wear with black or brown shoes with them. As a suit, i am aware that black or brown works, but what about just wearing them with a shirt and sweater? Say a black, navy or dark green sweater... Can I still wear brown?

IMO, Depends on the shade of grey of the slacks. If they're lighter, then pair with dark brown or tan shoes. If they're darker, (closer to charcoal) then only dark brown shoes.
