Yes, you call always dress down with a pair of dressy shoes but the reverse is not true.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't mind blucher boots with suits and casual wear, but bal boots for me are reserved for suits only.

I tend to go the opposite direction -- don't mind casual shoes with dressier stuff, but often think dressier stuff looks off with casual clothes. Take Mafoo's longwings. I think those look better with a suit than most bals do with shirt and khakis.

I actually just bought a pair of bals with the intention of wearing them somewhat casually. They're a light color and have some texture to the leather. We'll see how this pans out.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

I think dressier shoes can be worn casual, depending. If you are dressing otherwise very 'street', they won't look right. But if you are wearing more classic casual clothes (Barbour jackets, OCBDs, cashmere sweaters, 501-like jeans, etc.), dressy shoes can look perfectly right.

Lately I've been reconsidering my stance on this, as I have some beautiful bals that deserve to be unleashed upon the world. And no, I'm not above admiring my own bals. They're magnificent, if I do say so myself.

Until now, though, I've tended to think that dressier shoes could work with the very casual -- denim, sometimes -- and coat and tie. But the nebulous world of biz cas was more treacherous. Saw a guy in full-cut khakis, shirt and brown bals the other night and thought it looked weird. At least the bals were well worn, which helped. But bluchers would have looked better, I think.

I once was militant on this, wearing bals only with suits. I've moderated, but you'll still notice a glaring lack of bals in my WAYW sportcoat pics.

A shame, as I've got some mighty fine bals.

I demand first right of refusal -- best I can tell Doc, we wear the same size.
