What shirt colour with brown suit?

I will get my new suit by next week, SB in a milk chocolate brown. I am not sure of matching colours for a shirt: white will obviously work, am not too sure of light blue, can't stand pink... my favorite idea is purple bengal stripe (which I don't own and cannot find in any store around). What would you guys choose?

I'm with johnapril on the ecru or off white. You could also easily do light blue. What's wrong with pink? Give it a try; you may surprise yourself. The only color I'd be wary of would be grey or maybe yellow.

It really depends on the tone of the brown, IMO, and also on the complements such on the tie you will wear.
My favourite winter suit is dark brown one. I often combine it with a blue shirt (not pale blue, rather kind of strong blue, but neither dark nor light), or a green shirt (toward the darker end of the green scale), or with an off white shirt. Sometimes I also wear it with a shirt having a strange colour between mauve and pink (a quite "pronounced" colour), or with a shirt having wide stripes in a bourgogne kind of colour.
I mean, actually all of them combine well with the colour of the suit, but some give rise to raised eyebrows among my more conservative colleagues.

White may not be the default color for a brown suit, but a white shirt with a smart macclesfield tie, and black shoes, really spiff up a brown suit.

I actually find that ecru looks awful with my brown suit. Plain white, pink, or, depending on the brown, shades of blue all work better.

I think of white shirt with brown suit as a "fifties" look, and blue shirt with brown suit as a "seventies" look. I do both.

(I wasn't alive in the 50s and don't remember the 70s, though, so I may be way off.)

I especially like the fifties connotiation. And the idea of black shoes. But pink...

... I guess I simply don't like it.

Agreement on the light blue. I used to have a chocolate brown Canali and wore a light blue shirt with a Stefano Ricci tie that had brown and yellow checks in it and it was a smashing combination.
