Oh for goodness sake. So what if he doesn't support interminable lockdowns and has concerns over the future of live music?

Interesting that the second he doesn't toe the party line the cancel culture brigade on Twitter are digging out drug-addled comments he made nearly half a century ago. Comments that he has repeatedly apologized for.

No need to get to moralistic, man.

I asked if the comments were true...I meant especially the "Keep Britain White" comments, which shocked me. (And I don't gaf about "cancel culture".)

It turned out he did make those comments, and I find his "apology", far too many convenient years later (I just listened to it, see below), actually just as insulting, referring to "Eric" in the third person, etc. Is it really apologizing when one says, "Yeah, but...". The guy is smarter than that, I thought.

And then trotting out "cancel culture" references is now so tedious too, isn't it, when used to defend asinine comments made by a very public figure, an icon, regardless of the age and/or drug situation of the guy. Many other people, in similar positions and situations, never said something as crass and idiotic as "Keep _____ White." Of course, many others have, indeed, and moreso recently, and so racism persists and mutates apace, tacitly supported also by weak and insincere mea culpas and defenses such as these.

Are we to demand ideological purity from the musicians we listen to? Should Chuck Berry be cancelled for putting cameras in womens bathrooms? Jimmy Page for keeping 14 year old groupies? David Bowie for flirting with fascism and calling Hitler a rock star?

That was not exactly an apology...2018, on tape, to promote a legacy film, he hardly comes off as regretful or truly sincere, does he? What complete bs. Tacit acceptance and all that....

I despise the term "cancel culture", find it ridiculous, meaningless, reductive, and a completely two-way exercise in hypocrisy whenever employed.

What is your obsession with this "cancelling"? I have no idea about others, but I have certainly not asked for that.

Ideological purity doesn't exist even among the buddhas, so, no, but regardless I myself find that behavior cited above, as well as similar behavior among many others not at all restricted to "those wild and crazy rock musicians!!!" generally pretty creepy.

To ask however for better communication: deeper hindsight and experienced honesty, 42 (1976-2018) years later, in retrospect, with the guy looking back on past "sins"...yeah at that point we, citizens, people, all of us, have every right to expect better behavior and examples...all while still listening to the music, loving and appreciating it, with no stupid "cancel" button in sight. Might we do better, all of us, and perhaps get out of the crap we collectively have been fairly continuously descending into.
