Some Eurotrash kid on my hall's been listening to trance and dubstep nonstop, so I've been leaning towards electronic music lately:

Long story: due to our son's guitar teacher, our son wants to hear a track off the new Dream Theater album. The track is 19 minutes long, which means I have to buy the whole thing - and the extended version, at that.

So I'm doing the Responsible Parent Thing and listening to it, and - let me preface this by saying that I liked Images and Words and Awake (two early albums) and still dust them off from time to time, when I feel like a dose of pretentiousness. This new one, though - has not won me over yet, although I'm quitting on each song only 5-6 minutes in. Four of the tracks come in over 12 minutes. And it's quite darkly-themed, so much so that I'm having second thoughts about letting the little one listen to this despite its lack of profanity or Quesitonable Subject Matter. I'll continue to slog through this in the meantime, but I suspect I may not enjoy it much.

I guess the bottom line is that I don't want a 10-year old to think that minor-key pretentious musicianship is good music.

The new Dire Straits self-titled LP is really good. Almost beats my pristine original LP.
