Been burning my way through the Wong Kar Wai collection on Criterion with immense pleasure. This is my tentative ranking:

1. Happy Together
2. In the Mood for Love
3. Chungking Express
4. 2046
5. Days of Being Wild
6. Fallen Angels

Feels unfair to rank them. Aside from Happy Together and In the Mood for Love, which stand far and away above the rest, 3-6 are all very very good and I intend to watch them all again at some point before they leave the channel.

Not in the collection which I have seen is The Grandmaster, which I really liked. Zhang Ziyi is excellent in both this and 2046, where she steals the show. Tony Leung has always been one of my favorite actors, and seeing his work with Wong has really made me more appreciative of his talents.

I haven't seen:
- My Blueberry Nights
- The Hand
- Ashes of TIme
- As Tears go By

Absurdist comedy of the first order on Netflix.

Watched this on Stan and mother of god it was the original cinema release of the movie with the Chandleresque voice over. I haven’t seen this with all its flaws since about 1986. I didn’t even think copies of this were still in circulation.

I know this automatically makes me a misogynist and all, but man that 2016 one was unwatchable.

The Suicide Squad was pretty good.

I thought The Suicide Squad was fine. Really danced with the line between edgy and dumb for me. Good action, silly characters and plot, most of the jokes didn’t land for me. It bums me out that Robbie spends so much time playing Harley Quinn. Cena was a lot better in this than F9. I found zero emotional connection to the characters, as much as they tried with ratcatcher.

My assessment is similar, though I enjoyed the jokes a bit more than you. I think Polka Dot Man could have been more emotionally engaging if they'd given him a bit more screen time, but yeah, I didn't really get invested in any of the characters, either. It was also about twenty minutes longer than it should've been.

Nonetheless, it was fun. I'm not sure how my opinion would change if I had seen it in a theater. A huge screen and state of the art sound system would obviously help the experience, but I'm not sure that's fifteen bucks of added value.

The needle drops made me roll my eyes more than anything else, felt like James Gunn was so desperately telegraphing “GUYS ARENT I COOL AND EDGY”

Meh, these days, I sorta expect it in a superhero movie, especially the "funny" ones.

The Green Knight

Definitely one of the weirdest and least predictable movies I’ve seen in a while. It seemed like a very atypical medieval tale.

I mean, it ran rings around the last Suicide Squad movie, and probably every other DC movie post Nolan Batmans. So there's that.

But basically it was like "let's tell the Guardians of the Galaxy guy to take our characters and make a Tarantino film".

So he did.
