Also, debating on whether or not I should watch Spartacus. It's 4 hours long and am afraid to commit.

I saw the critically acclaimed "The Art of Killing" a little over an hour ago. I found it weird, confusing, over-long and generally tedious. I've always thought of Indonesia as kind of a creepy place, and this only reinforces that sense.

It's 'The Act of Killing'....very creepy and disturbing. Indonesia's not a creepy place though. It's just that relations between people of malay origins and the chinese have been fraught with a lot of tension in the past and even to this day.

I went on vacation last month to the Florida Panhandle, and in one of the cities we visited there was a little shop run by a guy who was like an encyclopedia on the area. One of the things we talked about was the movie Ulee's Gold, in which this guy had a bit part. After talking to him (and restocking our tupelo honey supply in his shop), I figured I should check out Ulee's Gold, since it would be cool to see how the region was portrayed in a movie and the reviews were all good.

Yeah, no. The best part of the movie was spotting the places we visited while we were on vacation (and a couple from when I lived in Orlando). Other than that, the movie was decidedly "meh," and I don't see why it was so well reviewed.

Huh. I loved that movie. It's a masterpiece of great acting.

I was thinking the same thing, Stitch.

It was lauded for the acting, particularly Fonda and the mom from Home Improvement, but I just didn't see it.

well, if home improvement was know for anything, it was the abundance of good acting.

I would recommend The Day of the Jackal and Midnight.

The Day of the Jackal is so awesome!

(And the Gere/Willis remake is so awful.)

Since nothing explodes and the characters actually engage in protracted dialogue I can see why stitch didn't like Ulee's Gold :tounge:

Saw it in a single sitting, highly recommend it. Kubrick has an impressive legacy of work under him.

Generally speaking I'm turned off by violence but that movie was excellent.

So you were serious about how much you liked Ulee's Gold.

Maybe I'm a philistine, but I just couldn't get into it. I usually enjoy movies that are dialogue heavy and/or paced slowly, but it didn't do it for me. I was disappointed with Fonda in particular. I didn't see why his performance was so highly regarded; it actually felt pretty stiff and one-dimensional to me.

Yup. I finally got around to watching it a few weeks ago after wanting to see it for years.

Excellent movie. Gritty (and more than a little ), but I really enjoyed it.
